New regulations for flying after Covid-19

Has your flight been cancelled because of the Coronavirus?
Below the latest news related to flights to Spain from UK after Covid-19:
- 25 August: Ryanair is leading flights from UK to Spain as tourists do not want to resign their holidays.
- 24 August: Easyjet announced it is closing its bases at Stansted, Southend and Newcastle airports.
- 6 August: Turkish Airlines operate again from Malaga airport with direct flights to Istanbul.
- 28 July: Jet2.com decided to cancel their flights from UK to Spain.
- 27 July: Ryanair, EasyJet and British Airways will not cut UK-Spain flights.
- 27 July: Tui cancel flights to Spain.
The airport is now operating normally, although some airlines are cancelling their services. Travellers are advised to keep a safe distance of 1 meter.

Can I get my flight money back because of the Coronavirus?
If the government or the responsible entity officially indicates that you should not fly to the country where you were going to travel, you could claim the cost of the flight ticket.
It is common that some companies offer vouchers instead of money, so you can change the dates of the flight to a later one or choose another destination.

What to do if they cancel your flight?
There are two possible choices, one of them is to request a refund online in order to recover the money. Another option is to request a flight change for free.
If you have your flight seat booked you can’t do anything until it is cancelled by the company.
If it is a return flight and you are stranded the company must provide with food, lodging and transportation until they can provide a new flight.
Can you claim if an airline cancel your flight?
You can claim financial compensation if an airline cancel your flight, the requirements are as follows:
- 125€ compensation: If the delay of re-routing is up to 2 hours and the flight is less than 1500 km.
- 250€ compensation: If the delay of re-routing is up to 3 hours and the flight distance is up to 1500 km.
- 300€ compensation: If the delay of re-routing is less than 4 hours, the flight is up to 3500 km and the flight has not taken off or landed in the EU.
- 400€ compensation: If the delay of re-routing is above 3 hours, the flight distance is between 1500 and 3500 km and the flight has taken off or landed in the EU
- 600€ compensation: If the delay of re-routing is above 4 hours, the flight distance is above 3500 km and the flight has not taken off or landed in the EU.
*Airline must also provide drink, food, accommodation, transport from and to the airport for the new flight and free telephone call.
The full compensation is only applicable if you request a refund of the fare. If you agree to travel on a flight with a delay of between 2 and 4 hours, the compensation is reduced by 50%.
There is no right to compensation if you receive any kind of communication notifying you of the cancellation of the flight more than 14 days in advance. If the cancellation is due to a major force or if they offer you a flight with a schedule close to the one you originally had.
There is also a right to compensation for damages that you can prove such as transport or accommodation already paid.

Old news about cancellations
Strikes, flight cancellation and all information that is old will be moved from the top of this post to under this line:
- 28 May 2020: Vueling will begin providing flights linking the Costa del Sol to 14 destinations, including Amsterdam, Paris, Rome and Brussels. The activity is planned to start between mid-June and July.
- 20 May 2020: If the health authorities allow them, Air Europa will start recovering its domestic flight plan in the week of 22 June. European operations will be reactivated by the beginning of July, while for international flights they expect returning to activity in the second half of the same month.
- 12 May 2020: Ryanair plan to start flights from 1st of July if health authorities from each country allow it.
- 29 April 2020: Wizz Air will resume some flights from Luton airport in the UK from 1 May.
- 16 April 2020: Ryanair says it will return to offering flights on a continuous basis as soon as the Coronavirus is defeated. They hope, in the words of the communicator, that it will be sooner rather than later. They are currently offering minimum flights for emergency situations.
- 30 March 2020: From the 290 daily average flights, we can find only 10 on 30th March. They advise they are not planning flights until June.
- 25 March 2020: Terminal 3 is closed and it is only operative the Terminal 2. The aim is to speed up the transit of passengers.
- 24 March 2020: Airport is almost empty of passengers and there are just a few flights departing in the coming days.
Thomas Cook goes bankrupt
The company immediately ceased operations, leaving more than 600,000 people stranded worldwide. All bookings have been cancelled and the UK Civil Aviation Authority is expected to begin the repatriation of more than 150,000 Britons.
In Spain, the repatriation process will be carried out from the cities of Almeria, Alicante, Girona, Reus, Ibiza, Palma, Menorca, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife. In Malaga bankruptcy has few consequences as it does not appear among the first destinations of this company in Spain.
The cost of accommodation will also be borne by the government, as all flight and holiday bookings have been cancelled.
Those who have not yet started their holidays can claim a refund.

British Airways cancelled flights
Almost all flights operating in the United Kingdom during the strike have been cancelled.
Malaga has had 22 cancellations during the two days of strike scheduled for 9 and 10 September.
The cause of the strike has been on the part of the pilots who demand a wage increase.
Iberia Strike at Malaga Airport
Four strikes have been scheduled for September 7, 2019 by Iberia personnel with the aim of requesting an improvement in the working conditions.
The strike schedule will be as follows:
- 4:30 am to 7:30 am
- 9:30 am to 11:30 am
- 2 pm to 6 pm
- 10 pm to midnight.
What did happen in 2017?
Airberlin closed since Saturday 28 October 2017 due bankrupt.
Monarch airlines closed due bankrupt and cancelled 6 departures from Malaga airport.
Up to 2000 flights cancelled by Ryanair have been announced for up to 50 flights per day in September and October.
On September 13 the airline Vueling cancelled flights with arrival or departure from Malaga airport. This cancellation affected a flight from Majorca to Malaga and from Malaga to Santiago de Compostela.
The airline offered passengers paid hotel stays and new flights to Malaga today.
Strikes in Malaga airport

From 22th of June there will be a strike from Security staff on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am. to 12 am. Flights will be operating as usual but there may be longer queues for Security check.
It is recommended you to allow extra time for avoiding possible delays passing the security checks.
Strike and flights in France
The strike of the controllers from airports in France was causing some delays in the flights that had to fly over the Gallic territory. These flights include those connecting the Costa del Sol with Edinburgh, London-Stransted and Dublin.
French controllers’ strike ended on Friday, March 10, so it should not affect future flights.
Strike and cancellations of flights with Berlin airports
The ground staff strike at Berlin airports are affecting scheduled flights with Malaga airport.
From the 4 of the morning of the 13 of March has begun the second day of strike.
The strike will continue until Tuesday at 5 in the morning. So if you had a planned flight for getting back to Germany or for visiting Malaga, you should ask your airline about the situation.
This is the second strike after the one produced last Friday.
