January is a month especially suitable for active tourism without the heat. Would you like to visit beautiful natural surroundings or get to know other towns and their gastronomy?

Climate in Málaga in January

In addition to the post-Christmas slump for those who celebrated over the holidays, we can expect good weather and activities. I will talk about the latter a little further down. Let’s look at the weather in Málaga in January and what kind of clothes you need to bring if you plan to spend a few days here.

Weather and temperature in January

The weather generally continues from December. There is usually a sharp drop in night-time temperatures from 31 December in Málaga onwards, or even into January.

Daytime maximum temperatures are around 16-17 ºC with peaks that can exceed 20 ºC, and minimums are 8-11 ºC with occasional drops below 0 ºC at night.

Average rainfall is about 4-6 days. Little wind, and mostly sunny days or with light cloud.

Sample chart to see the evolution of temperatures over the month.

What clothes to bring in January

Before any cold snap in January, coats may only be needed until midday. After the temperature drop, you will want to keep them handy.

There will be days when the sun shines strongly and you end up in a T-shirt.

Recommended clothing in January:

Warm jacket.

Long-sleeved T-shirts.

Short-sleeved T-shirt.

Thermal T-shirt.

Long trousers.

Appropriate footwear.

Sunglasses.

In addition, if you plan to walk on sunny days, you may want shorts. Remember, however, that temperatures drop sharply at sunset, especially further inland.

Bathing in January? Is the sea water cold?

No, bathing in January is not common, and even less so among locals. However, some tourists find it pleasant and take a dip in the sea or pool on any sunny day in January. I remember doing it in the cold season when I was 16, after my father bought me a surfboard, so I had to try it.

Although not everyone will dare to swim in January, the weather is suitable for visiting the beach.

What is the temperature of the sea water in January? In mid-January, it is between 15 ºC and 16 ºC.

Activities during January in Málaga

There are activities all year round and although January in Málaga is considered low season, it offers visitors interesting activities that they will undoubtedly enjoy.

Guided tours in the Torcal de Antequera

During January, guided tours take place in the Torcal de Antequera, ideal for those who want to venture into nature and enjoy breathtaking karst landscapes.

You can also visit the Dolmens of Antequera.

Check the scheduled routes for this month and book your visit on the official website: http://www.torcaldeantequera.com/en/guided-tours/guided-visits/

Almond Blossom Route

Towards the end of January and into February comes the wonderful spectacle that nature offers during the almond blossom, a preview of what awaits us in spring.

There are many places to enjoy this display.
