Calle Larios: Shopping day in Malaga city centre

With the opening of the new store of Victoria’s Secret in Calle Larios I want to take the opportunity to make a guide of the main brand’s stores in the centre of Malaga. But before, what about knowing a little more of the main commercial street of the city?

In another entry of the blog I wrote about malls, visit the link if you want to have a look at opening times and available shopping centres in Malaga.

History of Larios Street

The fifth most expensive street in Spain was not always known as Calle Larios. After the Second Republic in Spain it became Calle 14 de Abril, a name that was again reversed after the civil war.

The street was inaugurated on August 27 in 1891, although its planning goes back to May 1, 1880. The project was taken over by the Larios family, the lack of funds from the city council made the government unable to handle such a work of this magnitude.

Larios Street was one of the few streets in Malaga with sanitation system, water tubs and 2 bathrooms per house. A luxury within the reach of very few people back then.

Currently most of the buildings belong to two families, the Larios and the Quesada family. This street is one of the most beautiful in Europe, and where however almost nobody lives. Prices and noisy background could be some of the reasons, as this is one of the main streets where most of the festivities take place.

Most old commerces there were paying an old rental contract, affordable and cheap enough to make some profit. After the expiration of this old rental contract the prices did rise by more than a 1000%. This price increment caused small family business to close in favor of international brands. Calle Larios is among the 50 most expensive streets in Europe with prices that exceed 20.000 euros per rental month.

Events in Larios Street

This street features many events along the year, with a cultural identity it is one of the places you should not miss when visiting the city.

During the Malaga Film Festival the street dresses its best finery with a red carpet.

In August and during the Malaga fair, this street is one of the main meeting points during the day. There are people drinking and dancing and the streets are ornamented for the occasion.

During September it takes place the Larios Malaga Fashion Week Runway. Two days of fashion couture with around 30.000 people visiting it.

At Christmas the Larios Street dresses up with lights. Every year the Christmas lighting in Malaga is a surprise. It becomes one of the most beautiful Christmas lights in Europe.

Easter in Malaga is a very popular event. Many of the balconies are rented, they put chairs on the sides of the street also for rental. It is one of the streets that the Easter Parade never misses (Procesión de Semana Santa)

How to get to Calle Larios

Calle Larios is very well communicated and is at the city centre. If you want to get there using public transport you have several choices.

Getting to Calle Larios from the western Costa del Sol:

The train line links Malaga with Fuengirola, for nearby stations and prices you can check our commuter train guide.

If you go by bus I recommend visiting our guide of buses in Malaga. You must get off at the last stop in Muelle Heredia, check the schedules here.

If you are going by car you have to take the AP-7 motorway passing Torremolinos and taking the MA-20 road towards West Malaga and the airport. Continue until you reach a sign that shows the route to follow for getting to the city centre.

Getting to Calle Larios from the eastern Costa del Sol

There is no train link so if you have to take the bus, check the schedules here.

If you plan to use your own vehicle you must take the coastal road N-340.

Parking next to Calle Larios

The nearest parking is at Plaza de la Marina (Marina Square) although there are many options and prices.
