Alfarnatejo

In the steep and narrow streets of the village one finds the ruins of a castle dating from the Muslim era. The castle is situated on the hillside at an altitude of 900 metres. Another pretty building is the parochial church of Santo Cristo de la Cabrilla which was built in the 16th century on the highest ground in the village. Rebuilt in 1977, the church has two naves separated by semi pointed arches. The square tower is mainly built of bricks and rubble.

Favourite dishes are those typical to the area i.e. migas (fried breadcrumbs), el choto al ajillo (baby goat with garlic), cachorreñas (soup made from hot water, olive oil, garlic, vinegar, salt and pepper), el morrete de setas (a wild mushroom dish), ensalada de huevos duros con hierbabuena y ajos (hardboiled egg salad with mint and garlic). The most typical dish is probably la olla or cocido a casserole made from locally grown chickpeas. Las tortas de aceite (olive oil pancakes), roscos caseros (a doughnut-like cake), pavas, and honarzos de San Marcos (oven-baked Easter cakes) are typical sweets and pastries.
